Fernando Freire é professor 40DE dos cursos de Graduação em Geofísica e de Pós-graduação em Dinâmica dos Oceanos e da Terra (DOT) do Departamento de Geologia e Geofísica (GGO) do Instituto de Geociências (EGG) da Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), onde é vice-coordenador do Grupo de Interpretação Exploratória e de Caracterização de Reservatórios (GIECAR). Trabalhou nas áreas de E&P e de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento da PETROBRAS, entre 1987 e 2016. Trabalhou na área de exploração mineral da Companhia Baiana de Pesquisa Mineral (CBPM), entre 1981 e 1987. Bolsista de produtividade do CNPq (Nível PQ-2) e Jovem Cientista do Nosso Estado pela Faperj, possui doutorado em Fronteiras da Ciência (Frontier Science) pela Universidade de Tokyo (JP), mestrado em Geologia Marinha Costeira e Sedimentar (UFBA), bacharelado em Geologia (UFBA), e técnico em Geologia (ETFBa). Seus principais temas de interesse são: interpretação geológica de perfis de poços; sismoestratigrafia; geoquímica de petróleo; ambientes de sedimentação; estratigrafia; tectonosedimentação; recursos petrolíferos não-convencionais; hidratos de gás; mapeamento geológico; pesquisa mineral.
